Natural gas is one of the world’s leading energy sources and is a cleaner source of energy when compared to burning coal. To help create a product that is valuable to the market, natural gas streams first need to be processed, contaminants removed, and often liquefied for transportation purposes. During the pretreat process, natural gas liquids (NGL), which include propane (C3H8), butanes (C4H10), and heavier hydrocarbons are recovered and further processed to be sold for other uses. After pretreating the natural gas stream, contaminants and byproducts including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), water (H2O), ethane (C2H6), and nitrogen are removed and the gas is liquefied, which reduces the natural gas stream to 1/600 of its gaseous volume.


Our high-grade adsorbents are specially designed to remove water and create a product that is suitable to be cryogenically separated and liquefied. Removing water from natural gas streams before entering the cryogenic process is vital to prevent freezing within the distillation tower and pipelines. Additional contaminants will be removed by the molecular sieve during this step to help produce a feed suitable for cryogenic processing.

Sulfur Mercaptan Removal

Our uniquely designed adsorbents are able to remove sulfur containing compounds including mercaptans and sulfides such as hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide (COS), and carbon disulfide (CS2) to meet your contamination requirements and create a clean final product with a higher value.

Mercury Removal

It’s not uncommon for mercury to be present in a natural gas stream, and this mercury needs to be removed to help prevent corrosion throughout the processing system and also to meet environmental regulations. Our specialized adsorbents are able to remove mercury from Natural Gas streams to produce a higher value product, and these adsorbents can be regenerated and used repeatedly when properly cared for.


The main purpose of liquefying natural gas is to create a denser form that takes up less space, which is useful for transportation via pipeline, rail, or in tankers as it becomes a more easily transportable product. Our adsorbents will ensure your natural gas is sufficiently dehydrated before the liquefaction step, to prevent any freezing within the system.

Peak Shaving

Peak shaving units are often used to store natural gas during seasons where the supply is greater than the demand for natural gas, which can help stabilize prices throughout the year. Adsorbents can be used in peak shaving units to cryogenically recover natural gas liquids to maintain a suitable heating value of the natural gas for the end user. Our adsorbents are excellent products for deeply dehydrating natural gas streams, removing water, to allow cryogenic hydrocarbon recovery.

Nitrogen Rejection Units

Nitrogen (N2) is commonly found in natural gas streams. Natural occurrences of nitrogen are typically low, but higher compositions can be caused by the injection of nitrogen into a gas pocket to increase the pressure inside and enhance drilling processes. For natural gas to maintain value and working ability, the composition of nitrogen should be below one percent and any excess nitrogen will need to be removed. Removing nitrogen from natural gas streams will also reduce the overall product stream volume during transportation, creating cost savings. Nitrogen Rejection Units (NRUs) are used to remove nitrogen from natural gas streams. Some NRU designs utilize molecular sieve under Pressure Swing Adsorption technology to selectively remove nitrogen to under one percent.

Hydrocarbon Dew Point Control

Hengye offers very specialized products that can be used to separate light hydrocarbons from natural gas by reducing the dew point to produce gasoline and natural gas. In this process, natural gas liquids are separated while natural gas is dehydrated.
